SPECULATIVE FUTURES

MOTHER, CALIFORNIA

Mother, California is a sci-fi documentary about a fabled institution that doesn’t exist yet. This future landmark was imagined in my unfinished speculative fiction novel, Body Parts. This project is intersectional, crossing topics, genres, and forms.

My ultimate goal is to create a blueprint for a sustainable future that subsequent generations can use to build such a place—a kind of speculative instruction manual for something that feels simultaneously inevitable and impossible.

This project blends sci-fi documentary (collaborating with creative AI), detective work (searching for a place that may never exist), worldbuilding fantasy (laying foundations in synthetic and real realms), and AI training (teaching machines to perceive the undocumented and intangible).

It explores new approaches to storytelling, combining human intuition and digital tools to challenge traditional narratives.

ROOM WITH A VIEW PRESENTS…THE TIME MACHINE

I created the framework for RWAV with Brandon Lomax as ash floated by our kitchen window like snow and the California wildfires burned all around us.

Commissioned by the government of Ireland in 2023, the first installment of this project took place in rural Ireland, transforming a coastal home in rural Ireland into a time machine, telling the story of one room, in one place, over a hundred years.

The project was an interdisciplinary collaboration among artists, scientists and local communities to imagine the future environment of a specific place through the portal of a home.

SHARED FUTURES

  • REIMAGINE THE PAST

THE SOUND OF A MIDLIFE CRISIS: A speculated history about the sound of a cowbell trapped inside a vintage synthesizer of a hack marketer. When the cowbell sound gains consciousness, it finds freedom in exploring its own origins and hoping for more creative horizons to come. This story was published in the 2022 anthology book 20 Decades of 2020 by GoFa Press and The Guild of Future Architects.

  • PROTOTYPE THE FUTURE

HEROESLAND: Working with HEROES, a non-profit organization in rural Louisiana, I reframed their story to match their current reality and the future they envision. By aligning their story with Black Lives Matter and Black farmer movements, we worked within multiple and overlapping story worlds to document the narrative. Professionals from the worlds of technology, marketing and branding and social media worked to expand the story. The transformation is ongoing, but in 2022, the founder was named one of 10 women changing the world by PEOPLE Magazine.
